Name Discrepancy
Shiina Ringo's name is probably the single most confusing part of her brand for foreign fans. Shiina Ringo is the Hepburn romanization of the kanji 椎名林檎 (しいな りんご/shi-i-na ri-n-go). "Shiina Ringo" is a stage name written in traditional style, meaning her family name is "Shiina" and the "given" name is "Ringo" (think Ringo Starr; not Starr Ringo)
The official romanization is "Sheena Ringo", give or take a few diacritical marks that spice up the packaging of albums like Zecchoushu (絶頂集) but have little bearing on the actual pronunciation.
I prefer "Shiina Ringo" because
- It doesn't use superfluous accents
- It doesn't lend itself to the idea that "Shiina" is her given name as easily as the "Sheena" spelling
- I am a creature of habit and I learned "Shiina Ringo" first.
