frequently asked questions
Here's is an elaboration of some questions I have either been asked more than once or anticipate receiving. Please scan the list to be sure your question has not already been answered before contacting me.
Why is an e-mail address required to join the fanlisting?
A valid e-mail address is required to verify whether or not a new fan is actually a new fan and not a spambot. All e-mail address are protected from spam, though fans also have the option of hiding their e-mail addresses from public view.
All e-mail addresses are stored in a database hosted at Peach-ArrowNET. However, this database is only accessible by Instinct's administrator and will never be traded or sold. The only e-mails a Instinct member will receive on behalf of the fanlisting are
- A notification that his or her application has been received (fans are given the option whether or not they want to receive this e-mail on the join form)
- A second notification that his or her application has been processed and he or she has been officially added to the fanlisting.
After these initiation letters, the only e-mail a fan could potentially receive from Instinct is notification of the site changing hands or otherwise making a major change that would affect the listed fans' privacy. Thus far, Instinct has never had reason to send a third e-mail.
How can I change my info?
To change your personal information, please fill out an update form.
Why is my site not listed?
Although all fans will be listed, I reserve the right not to link websites I deem inappropriate for this site's audience. Sites that are "inappropriate" are those that pose a security risk (contain adware, etc), promote hate against any one group of people, promote piracy of Shiina Ringo/Tokyo Jihen products, or has an "X-rated" focus.
Websites that either direct-link images from this domain or show no intent of linking to the fanlisting will also no be listed.
Why am I not listed?
There is no discrimination when listing fans, so the only way you will not be listed is if there is something wrong with the form: either downtime with my host's server or your internet connection has prevented the form from being processed or a valid e-mail address was not given.
Instinct is updated often, so if you do not see your name on the list within a week of sending your initial form, please don't hesitate to contact me or simply fill out another application.
What is direct-linking/hot linking?
Direct-linking is taking the url of a file (like http://midgar-rock.org/fanlisting/images/ff7_05.gif) and pasting it to a document on a different server. This "steals" bandwidth that hosts pay for. Please see this third-party article for more information on direct-linking.
If you are currently using a service like LiveJournal and Xanga where you cannot upload images, there are great free sites like Photobucket that will allow you to upload images to post on your sites or journals.
Why don't you accept re-direct urls at the fanlisting?
I feel re-direct urls are more trouble than they're worth. They usually add extra ads that range from annoying to malicious, and it isn't uncommon for free re-direct services to be down when the actual site is online and otherwise viewable to all. It's an unnecessary headache.
